What Happens To You During A Panic Attack?
Many people wonder why the symptoms of a panic attack can be so serious, and seem to relate to the heart and cardiovascular system in addition to the mental toll it can take on you.
The reason is because the cause of a panic attack usually has to do with the way you’re perceiving a certain situation. For example, let’s say that you’re driving and you begin to cross a bridge. Something as simple as an unexpected bump on the bridge could start the process.
To someone who has never experienced a panic attack, this won’t make sense. But to someone who has experienced it, you know how easy it is for your thoughts to take over and begin to think the worst in that situation.
You may start to wonder if the bridge is safe, or you may even begin to think that you’re feeling some sort of shaking coming from the bridge that really isn’t there. Either way, the more you get concerned about it and worried, your brain starts to perceive the bridge as a threat to your life.
Whenever you feel threatened in any way, a part of your nervous system gets turned on called the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS). This part of your nervous system is responsible for the “Fight or Flight” response that you may have heard of.
What happens is that your SNS is responsible for preparing the body to either fight the stressor, or flee from it. Either way, the whole purpose is survival.
So, the SNS will make certain changes within the body to prepare for this. For example, your blood pressure and heart rate will speed up because you have to get more blood flowing to the muscles to prepare you to fight or flee.
Now, if you were actually fighting or fleeing from something, that would be great. However, when you have a panic attack, there really isn’t anything to fight or flee from, so you end up experiencing this reaction and you can’t do anything about it, which is very scary.
This will also send more blood to the brain, so you may feel lightheaded, dizzy, or even nauseous. Once again, if you were actually using your muscles to fight or flee, you wouldn’t have these symptoms because the blood would be used appropriately. However, because you’re not using the blood for muscle strength, you end up having these symptoms because the blood has to go somewhere.
Your breathing will become deeper, but in the case of a person having a panic attack, this usually turns into hyperventilation, which then leads to a feeling like you can’t breathe. If you were fighting or fleeing, the extra oxygen would be great, but this doesn’t happen in the case of a panic attack, so you develop more symptoms.
So, do you see how this process can easily get out of control and make you feel like you may be having a heart attack, or you might even die from it?
